Wood Stone Rubber & Craft

WOOD
Wood is increasingly used in craft-related applications (furniture, interior design, fine-art pieces) and promotional goods that have a customized feel to them. Particularly as the wood will turn either darker or lighter upon interaction with the laser (depending on resin & sap within the given wood type), there are many different looks that can be created depending on the type of wood used. This can be extremely useful when you want to offer clients the ability to customize the look of their furniture, tile, design-piece, model, or etched-photo gift given the templates you offer.

Wood Etched pictures make unique and high-quality finished gifts, such as etching a picture into wood grain for a wedding or award, or creating a model. Many gift shops can offer the ability to imprint pictures into soft or hard wood, and show templates of models that a user could choose to cut into a given piece of wood, as many craftsmen & clients enjoy being able to select the wood type/grain for themselves.

The wood types that work best to etch the highest-resolution designs are smooth grain with low resin & sap to present a contrasted backdrop, particularly if it is a lighter wood as the etching appears dark on the wood’s surface.

Types of wood most popular to etch on:
-Maple
-Hickory
-Balsa
-Alder
-Cherry
-Poplar
-Bamboo

STONE
Stone is another material that is popular for craft & gift applications, such as tiles or souveniers, as it has a timeless look, yet is very personalized dependent on the grain of stone selected. Personalized stone leads to a high perceived value due to the obvious unique qualities of the stone selected (what color, grain, marking, shape does it have), and has a high perceived value due to its weight and durable, timeless appearance. Laser on Ceramics provides an unusual surprise to many as it helps the whole ceramic piece pop out into focus.

The best stone types for etching are usually dark stones, as the etching appears light on its surface. Just be aware, usually stone etching takes a higher power than wood etching, but can still be done with the same CO2 Laser.

Types of stone most popular to etch on:
-slate
-granite
-marble
-corian
-quartz
-onyx
-basalt
-stone tiles
-brick
-limestone

RUBBER
Another popular craft & gift item is rubber engraving, which can be used to make Ink Stamps or other Novelty Items, such as toys or unique promotional goods. Odorless rubber polymer sheets that are specifically made for laser cutting can be purchased, that leave a definite imprint and sharp edges. As with all laser applications, never leave the laser working unattended due to the standard operational risk or igniting small bits of the material on fire.
